Dysmenorrhea
Dysmenorrhoea is pain with periods, usually cramping in the lower abdomen. Some period pain is common; pain that stops you doing everyday things, gets worse over time or starts later in life can have a cause, such as endometriosis, that a doctor should look for.

Treatment
Period pain is usually treated first with anti-inflammatory pain relief, heat and, for some, hormonal contraception. The progestogen dydrogesterone (Duphaston) is used for some menstrual disorders, including painful periods linked to endometriosis; it is a treatment to discuss with a doctor after the cause is known.
